The seller offers for sale this 1970 Opel Olympia, a compact coupe with vintage charm. Powered by an 1,100cc four-cylinder engine and a manual transmission, this car embodies the simplicity and practicality of post-war German engineering. It has undergone a restoration, with bodywork, mechanical components, and paintwork attended to in keeping with its original specifications.
Previously registered with a dormant license, the car was reactivated in 2020 and underwent an extensive refurbishment. This included new rubber seals and gaskets for the engine, professionally tuned carburetors, renewed suspension components, and a overhauled braking system. A set of new tires was installed in 2020.
The exterior was repainted in its factory-correct Creme 439. The paintwork remains fresh. The overall finish is even, and the body panels were checked and restored as needed.
Inside, the original interior remains intact, preserving the classic feel of the car. The headliner has been replaced, and a period-correct radio is fitted. The seats and dashboard show signs of use but remain functional. While the restoration was completed with attention to originality, some minor imperfections remain consistent with the car’s age.
Opel introduced the Olympia as a compact alternative in its lineup, offering a blend of affordability and durability. The nameplate was first used in 1935, referencing the 1936 Berlin Olympics, and continued in various forms until the 1970s. By this era, the Olympia was positioned as an economical coupe, retaining Opel’s reputation for reliability. With a lightweight body and efficient engine, it was well-suited for European roads.
The model underwent several revisions over its production run, with the later versions featuring updated styling and mechanical refinements. Despite its modest power output, the Olympia was appreciated for its balanced handling and ease of maintenance. Today, well-preserved examples are becoming harder to find, with many having succumbed to rust or neglect over the years.
This particular example represents a rare opportunity to own a restored, running Olympia that retains much of its originality. It offers a nostalgic driving experience and stands as a testament to Opel’s engineering of the time.
