The seller offers for sale a 1951 MG TD MK2, a classic British roadster equipped with a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a manual transmission. Around 20 years ago, it underwent a full restoration and respray. More recently, in late 2024, it received a comprehensive technical inspection and service, including new tyres, oil pump, spark plugs, coil, thermostat, and water hose.
The TD2 is a later variant of the TD series, distinguished by a few mechanical updates over the earlier TD. With its swept fenders, upright grille, and flowing lines, the car presents the hallmark aesthetics of post-war British motoring. This example shows 3,150 km on the odometer, though mileage is not guaranteed.
The bodywork is described as being in good condition. The finish still presents well, complemented by period-correct chrome detailing and wire wheels. The soft top and side screens appear present in the gallery, though their condition is not specifically described.
The interior is trimmed in leather and remains intact, with expected signs of age but no major faults reported. The dashboard retains its original instrumentation, and the steering wheel and gear lever show only mild wear. The cabin is simple and purposeful, characteristic of MG’s lightweight sports cars of the period. Overall, the interior is reported to be clean, with all components functional.
Lights, indicators, and brake lights work, and a valid inspection (APK) is present. No technical upgrades have been made, and the car retains its original configuration with no power steering or modern modifications.
The MG TD was introduced in 1950 as the successor to the MG TC. It combined the classic British roadster styling with several notable mechanical updates, including rack-and-pinion steering and independent front suspension—both significant improvements over the earlier T-series models. The TD used the XPAG 1250cc engine in its early iterations, with later TD2 variants, such as this one, receiving improvements like larger crankshaft bearings and modified cylinder heads.
The TD was MG’s first model to gain serious traction in the United States, where the majority of cars were exported. Despite being right-hand drive, American buyers embraced its lightweight handling and characterful styling. Unlike its rivals, the MG TD kept traditional wire wheels and side curtains, reinforcing its vintage identity even as post-war design trends began shifting toward integrated bodies and larger proportions.
With a simple ladder-frame chassis, leaf-sprung rear suspension, and drum brakes all around, the MG TD offers a charmingly mechanical driving experience. Its modest power output is balanced by low weight, making it a nimble and engaging car to drive at moderate speeds. The TD2, produced from late 1951, represented the final phase of TD production before the introduction of the more modern TF in 1953.
Today, the MG TD is appreciated for its classic looks, accessible mechanics, and active global enthusiast support. Parts availability remains strong, and the simplicity of its construction makes it a popular entry point into vintage motoring. Restored examples, particularly those with long-term ownership and proven upkeep like this one, are sought after for both driving and collecting purposes.
