Description

Jaguar MK X | 1965

Highlights:

– Matching numbers 4.2-litre straight-six
– Manual gearbox with overdrive
– Restoration completed in 2021
– Burgundy leather interior
– Power steering and disc brakes

The seller offers for sale this 1965 Jaguar MK X, a large British luxury sedan powered by a 4.2-litre inline six-cylinder engine, paired with a manual transmission and overdrive. Originally delivered on 12 March 1965, this example benefits from a Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate (No. 46979) and retains its original chassis number (1D75380DN), confirming it as a matching-numbers vehicle.

Restoration works were completed in 2021, including a respray in cream white and a retrimmed interior in burgundy leather with matching carpets and insulation. The headliner was also replaced during this restoration. The car retains period-correct wood trim and functional electronics. Vredestein Sprint Classic tyres are fitted and described as nearly new. The braking system, including discs and pads, has been overhauled. According to the seller, the engine was revised in 2006 and remains responsive. The vehicle is equipped with power steering and disc brakes, enhancing drivability despite its substantial weight of approximately two tonnes.

The paintwork presents in very good condition, according to the seller, with no bodywork required. Chrome trim is in place and aligns with the vehicle’s original specification.

Inside, the car retains the classic atmosphere of the 1960s Jaguar saloons. Burgundy leather seats, new carpeting and insulation, and a new headliner contribute to a refreshed but period-correct cabin. There is some minor wear consistent with light use since the restoration, but no major defects are noted. All instruments and electronics are reported to be functional, and the wood panels are in good condition.

Mechanically, the car is described as good.

Launched in 1961, the Jaguar MK X was introduced as the company’s flagship saloon, replacing the outgoing MK IX. Designed to compete with Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the MK X represented a significant technological and stylistic evolution. It was Jaguar’s largest car to date, featuring independent rear suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, and a wide track for superior handling. At over five metres long, it was intended for both driver and chauffeur use.

Originally fitted with the 3.8-litre XK engine, the model received the more powerful 4.2-litre variant in 1964, along with an upgraded gearbox and improved brakes. The car’s styling was ahead of its time, with a wide grille and low roofline that hinted at Jaguar’s performance-oriented ethos, despite the car’s size. Inside, the MK X featured luxurious wood veneers, leather upholstery, and a full set of Smiths instruments.

The MK X was one of the first cars to combine grand touring comfort with sports car engineering, bridging the gap between Jaguar’s saloon and performance models. It found popularity among heads of state and celebrities, including British Prime Minister Harold Wilson and The Beatles. Despite its prestige, the car was costly to manufacture and sell, leading to relatively limited production numbers compared to smaller Jaguar models.

In 1966, the MK X was renamed the 420G with some styling updates, but the core mechanicals remained largely unchanged. Today, the MK X remains an underappreciated classic, offering vintage luxury and performance at a fraction of the cost of its contemporaries. This example, with its matching numbers, power steering, and manual overdrive configuration, represents a rare opportunity to own a fully restored version of one of Jaguar’s most ambitious saloons.
