The seller offers for sale this 1972 BMW 1602, extensively modified for motorsport applications. Originally a lightweight and nimble classic, this example has been transformed into a track-ready machine, featuring a 318is engine fitted with a turbo from a 2.5 TDS. Power is further enhanced by a programmable K-data ECU, an upgraded fuel pressure regulator, and an external wastegate. A large aluminum radiator and expansion tank, sourced from a 2.5i competition setup, improve cooling capacity.
Handling has been upgraded with adjustable suspension and a braking system featuring rear disc brakes. The drivetrain includes a gearbox from a 318is and a short-ratio differential from the original 1602. Other racing-focused modifications include a hydraulic handbrake (currently deactivated), a general kill switch, competition-grade wiring, and a relocated battery in the trunk with fireproof shielding. The interior is stripped for racing, with an OMP steering wheel and a partially installed roll cage—the rear section remains available for installation.
The exterior has been repainted in 2023 and presents well for a track-oriented vehicle. The 2002 Turbo-style wide arches accommodate the original Minilite R13 wheels. Minor chips or scratches may be present but are expected for a vehicle of this nature. The interior is functional rather than pristine, reflecting its motorsport focus. Seat wear and trim modifications are consistent with its intended use.
The BMW 1602 is part of the revered BMW 02 Series, introduced in the late 1960s as a compact, driver-focused alternative to larger sedans. It played a key role in defining BMW’s reputation for sporty dynamics. The 1602, equipped with a 1.6L four-cylinder engine in stock form, was lighter than its 2002 counterpart, making it an agile and responsive car. The model gained popularity in club racing and rallying, forming the foundation for performance-oriented versions such as the 2002 Turbo. Today, the 02 Series remains highly regarded among collectors and driving enthusiasts. While the original 1602 was never designed for turbocharging, many enthusiasts have embraced modifications like those seen in this example to enhance power and performance.
Noted imperfections include minor signs of wear on the bodywork and interior, as well as the expected modifications that may not suit a buyer looking for a factory-correct classic. The rear section of the roll cage is not installed but is included. The hydraulic handbrake is currently disconnected and would need to be re-bled for use. This car is built for performance and may not meet comfort expectations for regular road driving.
