This 1972 DAF 555 replica is a unique rally car inspired by the original factory DAF 555 vehicles of the 1970s. Originally owned by DAF Aartselaar director, the car was later transformed into a rally replica and upgraded over decades to its current rally-ready specification. The car has participated in numerous demo rallies with Slowly Sideways Europe. Powering the car is a Renault Alpine 1550cc engine rebuilt in 2007 by a specialist, featuring dual Weber carburetors and a custom exhaust system. It delivers around 140 hp, paired with upgraded drivetrain components including Volvo 66 elements and Kevlar-reinforced drive belts.
The car’s chassis includes a welded roll cage, reinforced suspension points, and upgraded shock absorbers, ensuring durability and handling on rough rally terrains. The braking system features Wilwood 4-piston calipers and ventilated discs at the front, complemented by sport brake linings at the rear.
The DAF 555 livery was recreated, including period-correct decals. Inside, it is equipped with competition seats, a 6-point harness (FIA approved until 2027), a Terratrip rally computer, and an intercom system. The aluminum fuel tank and fire extinguisher add further rally-specific functionality.
DAF’s legacy includes a unique chapter in rallying history, with the 555 model making its mark in European events during the 1970s. Known for their innovative Variomatic transmission and lightweight construction, these cars showcased the brand’s engineering ingenuity. The 555 was a testament to DAF’s ambition in motorsport, competing against renowned manufacturers in demanding rallies.
The car shows minor cosmetic wear, including small dents and paint scratches consistent with rally use. The right front fender was previously damaged during a demo event and has since been repaired and repainted.
